What's the correct amount of sleep that can benefit your everyday life?

As human beings, we need to carry out certain functions daily to stay active and healthy. Sleep is one of the necessities for all of us to be able to function at our best. It is apparent knowledge, but one thing that people might not know is what is the right amount of sleep that is required daily. Some people think that under sleeping or oversleeping is not a problem and are ignorant of its impact on their health and performance. It can be detrimental in the long run.

Why A Sound Sleep is Important?

First, let us understand what happens in the body and mind during sleep. Our bodies require time to rest and regenerate. You might know that babies and young adults grow when they are asleep. It is because, during sleep, our bodies undergo functions like muscle repair, protein synthesis, tissue growth, and hormone release. Thus, during our sleep, our body takes the time to remove all the toxins and repairs and recovers healthy cells to function effectively.

Our minds also go through a process where the nerve cells and neurons reorganize. This process helps to filter out the toxins that the brain might have gathered throughout the day. Through sleep, the brain can get rid of any information that is not required and helps keep your memory power intact.

From all the above information, it is clear that sleep is one of the most crucial parts of our life that helps us stay fit and healthy.

Required Hours of Sleep

Human beings of all ages need to sleep, but the number of hours required for the body to feel well-rested changes with age.

1. For a newborn baby, the hours of sleep needed is way more than a fully grown adult. The baby needs a minimum of 16-20 hours of sleep a day to sustain the level of growth that the body and mind might be undergoing.

2. Between the ages of one and four, a minimum of 11 or 12 hours of sleep time is required.

3. In the case of an adult over the age of 18 and old age people above the 60s, they require 7-8 hours of sleep. It is the average hours of sleep that can keep an adult performing at their best. It might vary for people who might be following a very unhealthy lifestyle, including the food they consume. The body might need more time to remove toxins if you consume a lot of junk food throughout the day.

If you do some form of exercise and eat fresh and healthy food, then the hours of sleep required could range from 6-7 hours or even less. But for most people who do not practice such health and wellness routines, it is mandatory to sleep for 7-8 hours to ensure their body and mind stay healthy.

It was also found that when people did not sleep for the required amount of hours consecutively for a week, their mental and physical health seemed to deteriorate drastically. But, when they got back on a healthy sleep schedule, they were able to think and perform their daily activities with much more efficiency.

Do Not Oversleep!!!

It is also important to know that it can be harmful if you oversleep often. This practice can lead to lethargy and an overall drop in the quality of your performance. When you oversleep, you are also increasing the risk of developing obesity, heart diseases, and anxiety. Just as lack of sleep can cause emotional instability, oversleeping can also cause such conditions to us. When you keep your body in a sleeping position for way too long, it can cause you to suffer from back pain, headache, and depression.

When you wake up, you need to check and see how your body feels after a full night’s sleep. Sometimes even after 8 hours of sleep, you might not feel so good as you might have not had a deep sleep. You might have been disturbed by dreams, and your mind is not completely resting. Therefore, it is important to get deep sleep every night to feel as energetic as possible at the break of dawn.

You can get good sleep by doing some simple prep at night like,

  • Staying away from all the electronic gadgets 2-3 hours before bedtime

  • Eating dinner at least 2 hours before bedtime

  • Doing some meditation or yoga that could relax your body to go to sleep with ease
