If the Indian automotive market in 2015 was anything to go by, you can expect another exciting year with a barrage of new vehicles set to be launched in 2016.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
The Brezza is Maruti Suzuki’s answer to the growing compact SUV segment here in India. The Brezza was first showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016 and will be launched very soon. The Brezza will carry a starting price tag of Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). While the Vitara Brezza is underpinned by Suzuki’s Global C platform, it is claimed to be designed and developed entirely by the company’s in-house R&D team in India. Powering the Vitara Brezza is the Fiat-derived tried and tested 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine. For the compact-SUV, the company is using the higher engine tune that also does duty in the S-Cross andCiaz. The engine develops 88bhp and 200Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to front-wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Toyota Innova Crysta
The next generation Toyota Innova is truly a step for the successful MUV. The Innova has been much loved for its reliability, comfort, practicality and overall appeal, and now the new Innova called the Innova Crysta, truly is a task then for Toyota to take it to the next level. At a glance, the vehicle looks more contemporary than before, but retains the same profile of its predecessor. The new Innova like the earlier model continues to be based on a ladder frame chassis. The earlier model’s wheelbase is also retained but the rest is history as the interiors are all new and the vehicle comes loaded with lots more equipment. The Onnova will be launched sometime in the first half of 2016.
The KUV100 is another compact sUV that will be launched from Mahindra. The KUV100 will be powered by a 1198cc, 4-cylinder, MPFI dual VVT petrol engine that produces 82bhp from the mFalcon G80 and produces 115Nm of torque. There is also the mFalcon D75 diesel mill, which is an 1198cc, 4-cylinder, turbo charged common rail engine that produces 77bhp, and is the best in its class with 190Nm of torque. The KUV100 will be launched in the first half of 2016.
Renault Duster automatic
The facelifted Duster was revealed at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, and Renault has announced that the new model will go on sale soon. Priced between Rs 8.47 lakh and Rs 13.57 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) the new Duster is equipped with an optional AMT (automated manual transmission) and comes with a number of cosmetic updates.
The Mahindra NuvoSport will be yet another compact SUV from Mahindra and it will replace the Quanto, upon which it is based. The car will cost around Rs 7.5 lakhs ex-showroom. Under the hood, the Mahindra NuvoSport is powered by a 1.5 litre, three cylinder turbo diesel engine capable of generating 100bhp of max power and 240Nm of peak torque. The engine is badged as the mHawk 100 and comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox with the availability of an AMT autobox.
Tata’s much anticipated Tiago hatchback will go on sale in the first half of 2016. Prices will likely start at Rs 3.20 lakh for the petrol base variant and rise up to Rs 5.54 lakh for the top-end diesel (ex-showroom, Delhi). On the outside, the Tiago comes across as a fresh and modern looking hatchback with neat and taut lines. Powertrain options on the Tiago include two brand new engines – a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol and a 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder diesel. The petrol engine develops 83bhp and 114Nm. The diesel mill is capable of producing 69bhp and a peak torque of 140Nm. Both the engines come paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Based on the platform used by the Polo and Vento, the Ameo is a compact sedan with a length of less than 4 meters. The Ameo though will not directly compete with rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and Honda Amaze because it will be positioned as a more premium offering. Going by the build quality and fit and finish of all VW models, this will indeed be the case. VW will be offering the Ameo with the same engine options as the Polo.
Using the Nissan Renault CMF platform used in the Renault Kwid, Datsun will launch a similar vehicle called the redi-Go to enter into the mini SUV segment. The car will also use the same 800cc petrol engine found in the Kwid. The redi-Go will be launched in May 2016. The car will also get a 1-litre engine with an automatic transmission, which will be launched much later.
The Ford Mustang is the most iconic muscle cars of all time with a pedigree dating back over six generations to the year 1964. The sixth generation Mustang is the first Mustang in history to be offered with right hand drive versions, and this was done so that the car can be sold in more markets. Thankfully, Ford has announced that they will bring the Mustang to India. The model headed to India is the GT fastback version that features a 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine developing 420bhp of maximum power and 529Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and power is sent to the rear wheels.
Expanding the luxury sedan segment, Jaguar will launch the XE luxury sedan. The Xe will compete against the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, but the Jaguar XE is the only car in its segment to be based on an all-aluminum platform. Jaguar will introduce the XE in India with a 2.0 litre, four cylinder, petrol engine in two states of tune – 197bhp and 237bhp. The former will be priced at Rs. 39.90 lakh, while the latter will retail at Rs. 46.50 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi.
The eighth-generation of the Passat was launched in continental Europe in January of 2015 and will be making its way to India soon. The new VW Passat is a feature loaded car with lots of tech including semi-automatic parking system, emergency driver assistant, autonomous cruise control system, a collision avoidance system with pedestrian monitoring and more. The powertrain option for India would be the 2.0 litre, four cylinder turbo diesel engine that also does duty in the VW Jetta in India. A petrol engine option could include the 1.8 litre TSI engine.
Jeep is set to enter India in 2016 with its very capable range including one of the most capable offroaders fitted with Command-Trac, one of the best 4-wheel drive systems and also a Rock-Trac low range gearbox for better offroading ability. A 256bhp 3.6-litre V6 engine with 352Nm of torque will power the Wrangler when it’s finally launched in India.
The Hyundai Tucson will return to the Indian market and will be priced around Rs. 17 lakh. The Tucson sits between the Creta compact SUV and the Santa Fe Premium SUV from the Hyundai stable. The new Tucson features new styling based on Hyundai Fluidic Sculpture 2.0. The car will be powered by a 1.2 litre T-DGi engine and will be mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox.
Tata’s upcoming Hexa crossover features a more muscular and modern design in contrast to Tata’s current design language. The Hexa is based on the same platform as the Aria, and like the Aria, the Hexa will come loaded with equipment and safety features. Powering the Tata Hexa will be the brand’s 2.2 litre, 4-cylinder DICOR turbo diesel engine.
Honda will also enter the compact SUV segment with the Honda BR-V in 2016. The car will come with a 1.5 litre iVTEC petrol engine with a possible CVT transmission as well. The 1.5 litre iDTEC diesel engine found in the Brio, City and Mobilio is also likely to be found in the BR-V.
Nissan will be launching their GT-R flagship performance model in India in 2016. The Nissan GT-R is only of the fastest real world performance cars in the world. The GT-R is powered by a 3.8 litre, twin turbo V6 petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox with 542bhp. Power is sent to all four wheels via a permanent all-wheel drive system.
Jaguar is all set to launch their luxury SUV called the Jaguar F-Pace in India. With Head up Display, an 8 inch touchscreen all new infotainment system, the F-Pace will also feature clever equipment like gesture controlled tailgate, Lane departure warning, Park assist and emergency breaking. The F-Pace will be powered by the ‘Ingenium’ 2-litre i4 turbo diesel engine. The car will be launched in the second half of 2016.
Maruti Suzuki Ignis
The Suzuki Ignis is a mini-crossover that has entered into production in global markets, and it is expected to launch in India in 2016. The Ignis is powered by a 1.2-litre Dual-Jet petrol engine featuring SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki). The engine is paired with a CVT transmission, available in both FWD and AWD layouts. We do expect a 1.0-litre turbocharged ‘Boosterjet’ petrol to also make its way in the Ignis when launched in India.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep’s luxury full-size SUV will also be making its way to India very soon. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the perfect fit for Indians who love larger than life luxury SUVs. Jeep’s flagship SUV will be pitted against the likes of the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class in India. The India spec model will be powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine capable of 240bhp. There is also talk of the performance oriented SRT model with a stonking great HEMI V8 motor.
Mercedes-Benz has already announced that they will launch the GLC SUV in India in the first half of 2016. The GLC will sit between the GLA and the recently launched GLE. The GLC could find the 2.0-litre 4 cylinder diesel engine or even the 2.0-litre petrol engine in the Indian spec. Mercedes is expected to launch the GLC in a price range of around Rs. 40 lakh ex-showroom.
