How to Accurately Throw a Football

One of the difficult things to learn in the game of football is proper throwing technique. It requires a little effort, skill and practice. In a good football game, everyone has seen the quarterback throwing the ball, with a perfect speed, motion, position, and method. To throw a pass to another player every football player must know how to accurately throw the ball.

Generally, balls used in any sport are round in shape but in American football the ball has a very different shape and size, and it requires special efforts to throw it. According to the shape and size of the football, physics says that if the ball spins and I put in motion with a little twisted before throwing, it goes farther compared to ball that is thrown straight with no rotation.

Therefore, the technique of throwing the football is very important in the game, and to become a good quarterback the player must practice and learn to throw football accurately. There are few things that require practice and refining while learning to throw a football.  These included how to grip the football, stance, how to hold and position the ball, throwing motion, follow through, and last but not the least the release of the ball which creates spin.

Basic Passing Technique: In the basic technique gripping of ball is very common: you have to hold the football with ring and baby fingers crossing the laces and your thumb beneath it. The index finger should be over the seam; thumb and index finger should make "L" shape.

Players generally make little variations in this technique to suit their comfort or personal throwing style. Don't hold the ball too tightly, hold it lightly making a firm grip by not letting your palm totally touching the ball surface, a little space between the ball and your hand is ok. Face 90 degree away from your target, hold ball in the general area of your neck to your ear, your body weight should be divide with approximately 60% support with your back foot and 40% with your left while standing with and open balanced stance with your feet squared out to your shoulders.  As you prepare to throw you should draw back your arm and open up your upper body creating a sort of “u” shape effect with your arms parallel to the ground at shoulder level.  Locate your target in your line of sight and step towards your target with your left foot planting it in the direction you will be throwing the ball.  As you start the process of step into your target you pull you left arm (or non throwing arm) tight to your body and start the rotation process of turn your body at the hips creating the torque and velocity required to power your throw.  As you step forward and throw the throwing motion you right cleat should come off the ground allowing your hips to move forward and end up parallel to your target.  As you arm comes forward your hand will pronote so the palm is now to the outside away from you body with your thumb pointing toward the ground.  Your index finger should be the last body part touching the ball.
