What To See in Lagos

What to see?

Start the tour through the Lagos Marina. Along the sidewalk that borders the place there is a fair with various regional products and beaches.

As it was from the Algarve that the first caravels left in the days of the Discoveries, this stretch of Lusitanian history is very present in the region, especially in Lagos - which was once the capital of the Algarve before Faro. Therefore, one of its attractions is a replica of the Caravela Boa Esperance, which is usually anchored there. So, book your cheap flights to Lagos NOW!!! Unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to see her because, at the moment, she is on a three-month expedition to promote tourism in the Algarve in Spain.

Following the Av. Dos Descobrimentos, towards the main beaches of Lagos, on the right side will be the Municipal Market (Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 2pm), built in 1924. There are three floors with fruits, vegetables, fish and meat, a cafe and a restaurant. There is still an inscription in honour of the Portuguese writer Sophia de Mello Brenner Andresen and a terrace in which one has a view of the Bay of Lagos.

A little further on, on the right side, you will find a pedestrian access. There are the streets of the historic center of Lagos. Take the opportunity to pass the tourist information office in Gil Eanes Square and take the map

By the same direction of Av; Of the Discoveries, later, you will find one of the main points of visit of the city: the Slave Market. Such a site was maintained to reveal the history of human trafficking. Beginning in 1444, Lagos regularly received slaves from the west coast of Africa, who were assigned to heavy labour and household chores and distributed throughout the country. Inside the building is the museum core that exhibits temporary exhibitions on the subject. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit it because it was under construction on the day of our trip.

The whole region next to the Slave Market is related to the Discoveries. There are statues of Infante D. Henrique and Gil Eanes - both from the 1960s, vestiges of the old wharves from which the caravels and the Governors' Castle departed (see more details of this region in this interesting itinerary of the Discoveries).

Return to Henry's Square and look for the bus stops (the service is called A Onda). Take the bus corresponding to Line 2 - Azul (towards Porto de MOs Beach) and get off at Praia Dona Ana. The ticket can be purchased with the driver and costs € 1.20. One more thing if you have budget for more traveling then must visit Stockholm by getting cheap flights to Stockholm. If you wish to use public transport several times, it is worth buying the daily ticket, which costs € 3.60.

This stage is the highlight of the tour. Dona Ana Beach has a beautiful viewpoint, near the landing point of the bus. Go down the stairs and enjoy the beautiful scenery also on the bottom. The water is not so cold and you can have a good time there.

Here is also one of the places where boats depart that make the way to Ponta da Piedade. An attraction that a friend had already indicated to us and, indeed, was worth it; we pay € 12.50 per person and it takes about 40 minutes!

During the tour, the boat passes through other beaches of the region and among the rocks and caves that form one of the most beautiful natural landscapes I have ever seen. Along the way, the guide creates a kind of story and shows us rocks with familiar shapes, such as a camel, scales, or the kiss of a couple. At the end of the route we could still see, on the horizon, the point of Sagres.

It is no wonder that this region has also been classified as having the most beautiful beach in the world, according to the Huffington Post.

Returning to Praia Dona Ana, we climbed the staircase, then the street where the bus left us and we continue to the left side, in the Ponta da Piedade Road.

When you begin to notice some openings in the middle of the bush, on the left side of the road, enter and head towards the rocks. There it is possible to have an inspiring view from below, with the boats and the sea.

Along the paths of the forest (he is already stuck on the ground, there is no mistake) or the road itself, follow to the next viewpoint built on a wooden platform. Down the stairs is Camilo Beach, but a beauty of Ponta da Piedade.

If you wish, return to Ponta da Piedade Road and go further to the lighthouse and its beach to continue contemplating this beautiful view. On the way back, take the tourist train that passes by (the ticket costs around € 2.50) or return on foot to Dona Ana Beach and get on the bus Line 2 - Azul, the same one used for the trip.

Arriving again at Av. Dos Descobrimentos, there are still easy access to Meia Praia and Batata Beach - if you want to eat some snack or take another dive! (Learn more about the beaches and their accessibility in this local chamber guide)
