A ‘smart city’ is an urban region that is highly advanced in terms of overall infrastructure, sustainable real estate, communications and market viability. It is a city where information technology is the principal infrastructure and the basis for providing essential services to residents. There are many technological platforms involved, including but not limited to automated sensor networks and data centres. A smart city would include: Adequate water supply, Assured electricity supply, Sanitation, including solid waste management, Efficient urban mobility and public transport, Affordable housing, especially for the poor, Robust IT connectivity and digitalisation, Good governance, especially e-Governance and citizen participation, Sustainable environment, Safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly & Health and education. The Government of India have launched Smart Cities Mission to develop 100 cities all over the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities. The government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a vision of developing 100 smart cities as satellite towns of larger cities and by modernizing the existing mid-sized cities.
To understand the concept of smart cities, exhibitions India launched the 1st Smart Cities India expo 2015 which had seen an enormous response from the government ministries and companies involved in making of smart cities. 207 Exhibitors from all over the world had participated in the 1st Smart Cities India expo. About 12,721 business visitor visited the show. The Show had 3 country pavilion where companies from specific country showcased their product and services for smart cities.
The Conferences at 1st Smart Cities India expo 2016 was a huge success as 241 speakers in 39 conference sessions was attended by 1,478 delegates, the conference sessions provided suggestions, and highlighted solutions to develop smart cities in the country.
The 2nd Smart Cities Expo 2016 is scheduled from 11-13 May 2016. As transport is consider as an important vertical of smart cities the 1st Smart Transport India expo 2016 will be co-located with 2nd Smart Cities India 2016 expo will showcase the innovation in the field of smart transportation.
The 2nd Smart Cities expo will see the launch of Smart Cities India Awards 2016 , which is an annual event designed to felicitate, recognize and encourage individuals, policy makers, companies, government bodies and associations working behind the successful execution of the mammoth dream of developing 100 smart cities and rejuvenation of 500 cities in India.
The award recognizes pioneering projects that aim to make cities more liveable, sustainable and economically viable by honouring best practices and models in the smart cities concept. The objective is to foster the development of future cities enhancing quality of life, innovation, competitiveness and efficient management. The 2nd Smart Cities India 2016 expo is the ideal platform to understand what is Smart Cities?
